Spanish Hall of Prague Castle

The magnificent Spanish Hall, 43 m long, 21 m wide 12 m high, is located in the north wing of the New Palace Courtyard of Prague Castle. It was built at the request of Emperor Rudolf II. in the years 1602-1606 by the architect GM Filippi as space for the Emperor’s vast collection of sculptures. Located in the former stables, where the Emperor bred Spanish rare breed horses – hence the name. The hall had originally a middle pillar that supported the painted ceiling, today’s ceiling is actually the product of several large-scale re-buildings in Rudolph’s time to preserve part of the stucco decoration of the walls. Today in the Spanish Hall is the venue of state acts, concerts and social gatherings.
